Abstract from Kingdom of Priest - A History of Old Testament Israel by Eugene H. Merill p. 478 While Nabonidus [Last King of Babylon] spent ten years in Tema, Cyrus [Cyrus defeated Nabonidus] was busily occupied in amassing an empire. Soon all that was left to incorporate into his vast realm was Babylon, and so he set his sights upon that prize. In the fall of 539 he took the city of Opis on the Tigris. A few days later, on October 10, he took Sippar without opposition. Nabonidus meanwhile had returned to Babylon just in time to witness the collapse of his glorious city and its capture, without resistance, by Gubaru, governor of Gutium and commander of the Persian army. This took place on October 12; two weeks later, on October 29, 539, Cyrus himself entered the city in peace. He forbade destruction, appointedGubaru governor, and left the religious and civil administration of Babylon unchanged. |
