The Measurements of Fathoms and Furlongs and the Return of Christ

By Jock Ellis

Even though politically and militarily Rome ruled the World during the Era of the writing of the New Testament, the Greek culture influence was more dominant. The Greeks during this Era used a standard measurement of length called a furlong. The Greek "furlong or stade" was equivalent to a length of 606 feet and 9 inches. The Greeks also maintained a smaller standard measurement of length called a "fathom," which was equivalent to a length of 6 feet and .81 inches. 100 Greek fathoms were the equivalent to the length of 1 Greek furlong. The Romans during the same Era used a standard measurement of length called a "pace," which was equivalent to a length of 4 feet and 10.248 inches. The Roman "pace” was similar to the Greek fathom standard measurement of length, except the Roman pace was 25% shorter in distant than the Greek fathom. Thus, a 125 Roman paces versus 100 Greek fathoms were necessary to equal the same distance in length of 1 Greek Furlong. Time is a quotient of distance (length) divided by speed. The Bible often uses length of measurements to indicate length of days, for example Deuteronomy 30:20.

Deuteronomy 30:20 That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length [H0753 orek] of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

orek length — a. length of ark; most oft. of ark & other measurements in tabernacle & temple.

Other verses that show the duration days (time) in relationship to units of measurement (length):

Job 12:12 With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.

Psalms 21:4 He asked life of thee, and thou gavest it him, even length of days for ever and ever.

Proverbs 3:2 For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

Proverbs 3:16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour

We have previously developed that God often uses the concept of Days to represent years see, Final Harvest Index Item 5). Since measurements of length are also equated to the length of days, a conclusion could be drawn that units of measurement for length can be interpreted as years or period of years. Interestingly, we see when 25% additional units of measurements are added to the Greek Furlong and Fathom measurements found in several places in the New Testament and the Greek fathoms and furlongs are treated as years or period of years, several pathway pointing to the year 2012 as the year for the Return of Christ become apparent. The following chart and table illustrates these points:

  1. The Winepress trampled (broken) away from the city (the physical organized Church) a Precursor to the End of the World
  2. There are total of 75 Jubilees that comprise the Biblical Season of Harvest.
  3. The word "or" can be translated "and" in John 6:19; thus the 25 furlongs (years) added to the 37.5 furlongs (years) = 62.5 years. 2011 years minus 62.5 years equals the year 1948 (the Year Christ warns that the summer harvest is near).
  4. Apostle Paul and the Ship wrecked a picture of the End of the World: 1) occurs on the 14th Night, 2) Storm Euroclydon- wind blows, Satan's attack on the Church, 3) Shipped destroyed (physical organized Churches destroyed) and 4) True believers saved apart from the ship (physical organized Churches)
  5. Context was heading to Jerusalem to raise Lazarus body from the dead. The believer bodies are raised on the last day, John 6:39. Eventide, Jesus took disciples out of Jerusalem and went to Bethany, Mark 11:11 (True believers taken out of the physical organized churches during the Final Tribulation Period).
  6. Satan attack on the churches in 1988 and achieves total control in 6 years and 5 months,. Matthew 24:15 (abomination of desolation).
